Preliminary Task

For our preliminary film, we filmed within the school grounds, therefore we didn't have much choice on location. The predominant locations used were the girls' toilets and the corridor on the ground floor of the school.

In terms of equipment, we initially used a HD video camera with a tripod to film, but eventually we ended up filming with our smartphones as we realised they are just as good in quality. Plus, it gives the film more of a handheld effect - making it seem realistic.

The plot unfolds following a girl who is in the girls' toilets. Unknown to her, there is someone in the room with her. So when she comes out of the cubicle, and looks into the mirror and sees a masked figure, she's surly frightened. The girl runs away, and hides behind a corridor. The masked figure, begins to stalk her, following her footsteps - intensifying the dramatic tension. Obviously hiding around a corner doesn't help as the stalker finds the girl quickly, in which she asks her stalker the weak "What do you want from me?" The film ends with an ambiguous shot of the camera getting closer and closer to the vent in the girls' toilets - the natural crescendo creating suspense for the audience.

Inner form and Outer form

For every film, there are always two sections; the inner form and the outer form. The concept of the inner form represents the film's thematic qualities which can account for themes, morals, messages, characters, and storylines. A typical storyline of the horror genre would be when a boy and girl are at an isolated location, camping in the woods for example, and a 'villain' finds them and kills them because one is more stupid than the other. On the other hand, the outer form refers to the iconography of the film - what makes it so special, so iconic. The outer form involves the film's location, colour, marketing and mise en scene which involves anything that one can see in a scene - props, weather, lighting, facial expressions etc.

Evaluation: how effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

After filming my short psychological horror, I then started to set out on making the ancillary products that would go along-side the film. I decided to create a film poster and a double page spread from a film review magazine. It was very important that my film was presented in these three media forms as it ensured that the target audience could be informed about the film on all media platforms.
