Short Film Brief

A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:

  • a poster for the film
  • a radio trailer of the film
  • a film magazine review page featuring the film

Psychological horror is one of the many sub-genres of horror. It is believed to be scarier than other sub-genres, purely because it focuses on everyday life, meaning that there is a chance that those events can happen in reality, therefore making the audience more cautious. This would differentiate from other subgenres such as supernatural horror because those events are less likely to happen. ‘Based on true events’ is often used with psychological horror because it tends to be based on factual occurrences in real life. Conventions of a horror poster

There are a variety of codes and conventions that are tied to media publications that define them and differentiate them from other publications. In particular, film posters of the horror genre predominantly employ the use the colour scheme of white, red and black. This is to convey a sinister quality, thus helping to promote the product of a horror film. Sometimes a lack of colour can be effective too as it could connote death or a sense of emptiness.   The horror poster often has edges that are considerably darker compared to the centre of the poster, the purpose of this is to put more focus on the central image, and to also add a shadow effect. I plan to incorporate this using a vignette effect as I believe in following the conventions of a horror poster. Evaluation: In what ways does the product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Forms and conventions define a genre, thus creating expectations that contribute to audience pleasures. The horror genre, with psychological horror as a sub-genre, has unique conventions that make it distinguishable from other genres. In order to understand these unique forms and conventions of horror films, I conducted some research before carrying out my production - in particular, I researched the conventions of my chosen genre, which was psychological.   In my research, I discovered that psychological films differ greatly from the average slasher film.
